Managing Director of National Steel Company declared: we are planning to use thermal coal in order to produce reduction gas in sponge iron production units.
According to the Public Relations of the National Iranian Steel Company, quoting the Public Relations of IMIDRO, , Mohammad Ghobadi on the sidelines of the METAFO exhibition stated: due to the energy imbalance in the country In recent years, the industry and mining sector have faced interruptions in production and surrounding problems, accordingly, National Iranian Steel Company (NISCO), in order to achieve the macro goals of IMIDRO and the Ministry of Industry,Mine&Trade is about to launch a new plan with the aim of “production of reduction gas using thermal coal in sponge iron production plants.
DR Ghobadi by reminding that during the past year, NISCO created a Think tank with the presence of experts and elites in the field of steel, declared: After domestic and international research and studies,
the team succeeded in creating a plan to define and implement a research plan in order to overcome the challenge of energy supply, by using thermal coal to produce reduction gas.
In this way, in addition to ensure the stability of the energy supply required by these units, a major step would be taken to resolve the gas imbalance and reduce the pressure of demand on the national grid in the country.
Ghobadi continued: “For the launching of this project, a tender has been held to attract investors, and concerning we hope that the result of this call will be announced in the next two months.”
Managing Director of National Iranian Steel Company added: ” We will provide the basic needs, including land, water, electricity, etc. for the investor, and we will also purchase the gas produced from this new process for 20 years.
He emphasized: “In this way, IMIDRO acts as a barrier to use coal instead of natural gas in direct reduction (DRI) process, so it will cause a huge change in this industry.”
Ghobadi stated: “A large part of the consumption of coal in Iran is of the coking type (for the production of steel in the blast furnace method), while our country has huge reserves of thermal coal unused), which are a suitable and reliable source for the production of reduction gas for sponge iron production units.”
