The International Recycling Organization (IRO) prefers the term “recycled steel” to “scrap iron” in order to engage public opinion and policymakers about the importance of recycled materials in global steel production.
Approximately 630 million tons of recycled steel are used annually, caused a reduction of nearly 950 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions while saving energy and natural resources. The term highlights the essential role of recycled steel in promoting “green” steelmaking practices.
