EMSTEEL Group, a major player in steel and building materials manufacturing in the region, has collaborated with Danieli, a global technology leader. They aim to introduce the first Electric Process Gas Heater (ePGH) pilot for the steel industry. This initiative is not only groundbreaking for the sector but also offers a scalable model for future upgrades.
The ePGH pilot project replaces traditional gas-fired heaters with electric alternatives at EMSTEEL’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plants. This shift is expected to cut over 2,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually by using green electricity. The innovation aligns with EMSTEEL’s goal to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030 within its steel business division.
Engineer Saeed Ghumran Saeed Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, emphasised their dedication to sustainable manufacturing. “At EMSTEEL, we are committed to shaping the future of sustainable manufacturing,” he stated. He highlighted that adopting scalable clean technologies accelerates their sustainable steel strategy and strengthens the UAE’s position as an industrial innovation hub.
The collaboration with Danieli’s R&D division involved extensive simulation, testing, and modelling to ensure optimal performance under industrial conditions. Starting with a 1.3 MW pilot phase, the project aims to expand to a 22.7 MW system, potentially transforming thermal process decarbonisation in the steel industry.
EMSTEEL has already made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. By 2023, they achieved a 23% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity. Their total emissions stood at 4.5 million tonnes of CO₂, marking substantial progress towards their net-zero target.
This milestone underscores EMSTEEL’s leadership in sustainable manufacturing and its commitment to advancing a low-carbon future for the UAE and beyond. The company aims to deliver industrial solutions that have lasting positive impacts on the environment, economy, and future generations.
